(BUSINESS)The Creatives Guide To Starting An Idea

Access to a multitude of different digital platforms floods our heads with creative ideas or desires to fulfil. A lot of us do not fulfil these desires because we simply do not know how to begin the journey of converting an idea into a creative pursuit.

This article is designed to do just that. Below is a sequence that I like to use to help this conversion process.

Step 1: Find a 'Why'

As with anything in life, identifying a reason as to why you want to begin on this journey serves as the foundation of your creative pursuit. This is what will keep you accountable during any struggles you may encounter as well as provide inspiration for why you want to begin a said pursuit. For some, their creative pursuit may serve as a way of challenging the powerful, for others their creation may serve as a vessel to explore and display their creativity free of any third party input. Whatever your 'why' is, identifying it and becoming conscious of this desire is the foundation of beginning any idea.

Step 2: Identify Your Strengths

What do you do well? For some of us, our writing abilities, the way we convey and display information is far superior to the way in which we would relay this same information in let's say, a video context.
Identify strengths that you have that allow you to pursue what you enjoy without feeling like you HAVE to develop these strengths. You should be willing and able to grow with your identified strengths with no struggle.

Step 3: Identify a Niche/ Receptive Audience

Where can your 'why' and strengths translate well to? Is there an untapped or receptive audience within a particular demographic that you can target with your content? This can also be referred to as the 'who' question. If you have an idea of who your audience may be, then this helps inform the last step of this conversion process.

Step 4: Create!

The prior three steps all inform and contribute towards this final step. 'Why' are you choosing to create? What strengths do you have? How can these strengths translate over into a 'niche' or target group (Who)?

Once these questions have been answered, you can begin the creative process. I believe that clarity of vision is a key determinate of enjoyment - approaching a creative pursuit with these three questions and acting on these questions in the final step is a sure fire way of ensuring that what you will begin is reflective of your passions.

There are of course other ways to embark on the creative journey. This is just something that I like to use to solidify in my mind whether an idea is worth pursuing.

What Is Masculinity?

It has recently become an interest of mine to explore the question “what is masculinity?”. Masculinity has long been associated with power, dominance, and authority but often, these components are in reference to   particular groups of people. Generally speaking, the most common form of masculinity is embodied by white, middle class and usually heterosexual men. This is sometimes referred to as "hegemonic" masculinity (although the term and it's ideas are  a lot more complex once you read further in to it).  There are however many other forms of masculinity that identifying men use to express themselves. Mas culinity, like most forms of social identity is  performative – this means that as men we perform masculinity in reference to what we think best embodies or defines the term. So to clarify, whilst hegemonic is largely viewed as the dominant form of masculinity, it is not the only form that exists.  Often though, men try to emulate dominant i...
