We lust everyday. We lust for more products, more clothes, more followers, more likes...I believe that we all encounter and activate out of the 'lust' aspect of our being for at least one thing, every day.
I would argue that our primal urges have manifested mostly into products - consumerism has never been more rampant - because we have never been so exposed. Exposed to others opinions, others judgement and others acceptance or rejection! With this exposure comes an emphasis on possession as a reflection of our own self worth. What we have, we are.
I have 10k followers, I am popular
I have red soled trainers, I am a swaglord.
I have a flash car, I am attractive.
The association of ourselves with our possessions is harmful because we never break the cycle - we are constantly seduced into more. Whilst I am not saying we totally remove ourselves from our material wants, that is a very difficult task, I am saying that we can ground ourselves by appreciating what we have that does not embody a material possession. For example:
What exists humanly that gives me purpose, drive and motivation?
What can simply be admired for what it is and not what it lacks?
Lusting is natural - we all do it. But when this lusting for more interferes with our ability to appreciate what we currently have is the moment we must intercept a maladaptive thought process.
