Welcome to
the second article of this ‘Launching an Idea’ series. In the first article, we
looked at identifying a driving force (available to read here), today we are
going to be looking at transferring that driving force over to a passionate
area.
What is a passionate area?
Passionate
area: A creative pursuit that a person feels most comfortable and most free to
operate within. This is usually a specific area within a wider discipline/creative
pursuit e.g. A fashion vlogger.
Chances are,
if you're reading this article you have an idea of what it is you want to do or
where abouts your creative idea is going to be situated – the passionate area
is a little more specific, though.
To give this
article some context, a friend of mine is a fantastic music producer. He can
produce a number of different genres of electronic music and has found success in most of them but his main
passionate area is within dubstep.
Now, some of
you may hear dubstep and go ‘yuck!’ but the music industry is a great example
to demonstrate the passionate area in action.
Music,
particularly electronic music is a massive, eclectic mix of genres, subgenres
and antigenres if you delve deep enough!
Drawing back
to my friend, he was having success as a ‘electronic music producer’ as he was
appealing to a massive range of people but his music wasn’t fulfilling him as
much – nor was he creating meaningful, consistent supporters as his music differed from one month to the next.
The moment
he classed himself as only a ‘dubstep’
producer and only produced dubstep,
he immediately developed a more passionate, intimate fan base but also felt
more fulfilled in his endeavours because he was producing music he was truly
passionate about.
Finding a passion area enables you to
identify a niche audience.
Niche audience: A specific group of
people who you appeal to with your content.
There are lots of electronic music fans, but there are hardcore dubstep fans that love the hell out of their genre. My friend has found much success with his music focusing mostly on dubstep and now has a worldwide fan base just from choosing to focus on a particular genre or niche audience.
Now, I am
not saying that with your passionate area you pledge your allegiance to a
particular field for the rest of your creative life!
What I am
saying though is that identifying a passion area enables you to target specific
people who may benefit from you and your driving force. My friend still
produces other genres from time to time, but the bulk of his brand is within
dubstep – his hardcore fans do appreciate a change from time to time, just not all the time. Does that make sense?
Can you see
how having a driving force makes it easier to identify a niche audience?
Once you
have an idea of what you and your work serves, you can then target people who may benefit from you
and your authenticity. This means that any relationships you build with people
once you launch your idea, will most likely be ones in which you, the creator
are emotionally attached to and willing to work hard for. Your audience in
return will most likely stay consistent with you and your content as a result
of your authenticity – a win/win!!
I have and
you will almost certainly have multiple passionate areas – but for the purpose
of launching the idea you’re currently working on, it’s better to stay within a
genre/niche for now.
You can maintain your creative integrity and transition your driving force over to other areas too, once an idea is established. I have a blog dedictated to mindset, but I also use my driving force to create exam preparation material for students. But we are talking about launching one idea that you have for now, so let’s stay focussed on that for now.
We covered a lot there!! To summarise this article:
- A passionate area is a place that you can operate most creatively and freely
- A passionate area enables you to identify a niche audience who will be most likely receptive to your content
- A passionate area is not something you have to stay committed to for the entirety of your creative life, you can mix and match at a later date. For the purpose of this series, we are only talking about launching and establishing one idea (for now!).
In the next
article, we will be discussing branding. Your idea is coming to life, so NOW we
can discuss the fun, more creative parts. See you there!
